|
On 24 Mar 2011, Berkeley ARES/RACES responded to a request for emergency communications support for the Windy Fire in Charleston County. Amateurs supplied communications required to replace or supplement normal communications means. |
|
| Communications were established between the American Red Cross Headquarters and one Shelter located at Santee/St. James ES in McClellanville, SC. | |
| The fire involved 2600 acres and necessitated voluntary evacuations of residents. Residents were allowed to return to homes after initial danger had passed. Berkeley County was asked to provide backup communications to Charleston County as landline failures and spotty cell phone coverage are common in that area. | |
| Utilizing the 146.760- (123.0) SC HEART Repeater, numerous tactical messages and two formal messages were passed. | |
| Participating Amateurs were: Vince Lombardo K4AOC, Darrell Moser KB7QVG, Dennis Zabawa KG4RUL, George Post KI4UIW, Bryce Meyers K4LXF (got permission from John Crockett of SCETV and SC HEART system and unlinked repeater from SC HEART System). | |
