American Red Cross Shelter Activation Training

26 Mar 2010

On 26 March 2100, Berkeley ARES/RACES participated in an ARC Shelter Activation Training session. ARC simulated the setup of a shelter at Goose Creek High School in Goose Creek, SC. The exercise was conducted assuming all normal communication channels were unavailable and relied on Amateur Radio and ARC satellite communications capabilities.

A communications station operating on 2M FM was setup at the shelter site. HF communications with an additional shelter, participating from Jasper County, SC., was unsuccessful due to technical difficulties.
As this ARC Training date coincided with the normal Berkeley ARES/RACES meeting date, we were able to train several new operators on message handling in a simulated. live environment.
